Today, a question came up from one of my clients about lap band surgery, and whether or not it would be covered on her insurance. The unfortunate truth is, lap band surgery is not covered on most insurances, unless of course, it can be proven that it is medically necessary, and even then, one might have to jump through some hurdles to obtain coverage for this procedure.
Over lunch, I discussed this topic with my husband and business partner, Scott Erickson, and I asked him if he happened to know why it is so difficult to get lap band surgery covered. He has had this topic come up before, himself, and it turns out, he had discussed it with the claims department of one of our top insurance carriers, so he posed the same question. What he was told is that insurers are hesitant to cover the procedure because the rate of success is too "low". Exactly what the statistics are, he was not told, but that was the reason he was given.
