But it's not.  Erickson Financial Services has discovered a surgery center located right here in the USA that offers deeply discounted surgical rates for cochlear implants to cash paying customers.  The $8000 pays for the use of the facility, the surgeon and the anesthesiologist.  The cost of the actual device is a separate cost, however, the surgery center that we have discovered does NOT take a profit above and beyond the cost of the device.  This is unheard of in a traditional hospital setting, where it's not uncommon for the hospital to mark up the cost of the device by two or three times.
